Poitiers and surrounds

Notre-Dame la GrandePoitiers is a city of 91 000 inhabitants. It is the capital of the Vienne department and of the Poitou-Charentes region.

Poitiers is strategically situated on the Seuil du Poitou, a shallow zone which is a gap between the Armorican and the Central Massif and connects the Aquitaine Basin to the Paris Basin. Poitiers’s primary site sits on a vast promontory between the valleys of the Boivre and the Clain.

As the regional capital and a university city, Poitiers can boast a heritage of 2,000 years of history that is interwoven into its present urban landscape. This “city of art and history” welcomes its visitors in a historic centre of great character, embellished by the presence of an exceptional number of monuments that evoke its rich medieval past.

Around Poitiers, between the Loire castles and the Marais Poitevin,
Poitevin Marsh nicknamed The Green Venice, the Vienne department offers various tourist sites. Among the most famous are the Futuroscope theme park, the Abbey Church of Saint-Savin-sur-Gartempe, a UNESCO world heritage site, the animal parks of Monkey’s Valley in Romagne & the Crocodile Planet in Civaux.
